Since their recent mentioning on the popular Dr. Oz TV show, raspberry ketones have gained an astonishing amount of popularity as a miracle fat loss supplement. In fact, Dr. Oz himself even referred to raspberry ketones as a “miracle fat burner in a bottle.” But is all this hype about raspberry ketones merely just that; hype, or can they really benefit the weight loss process?
Ketones are the chemical within raspberries that give them their distinct odor, and raspberry ketones are not a recent discovery. In fact, they have been approved for use by the FDA since 1965. Recently, studies have shown that raspberry ketones have potential to aid in the fat loss battle, and this news has excited many supplement companies and fitness enthusiasts alike.
Raspberry ketones provide a benefit to weight loss in two different ways. They increase the release of the hormone norepinephrine which increases the metabolic rate, and the ketones also go to work on a protein called adiponectin. Norepinephrine is also called noradrenaline and side effects include increased metabolic rate, a burst of energy and/or an increase in body heat, and greater mental focus. Adiponectin helps to increase glucose levels for steadier blood sugar. Adiponectin levels are related to genetics, so if obesity runs in the family, a lack of this protein may be involved.
While it was stated on Dr. Oz that raspberry ketones do not have any side effects, that is not true. As stated above, one may experience a rush of energy, an increase in body temperature or even an increase in heart rate. If you decide to go the route of raspberry ketones to aid in your weight loss quest, be aware that you may experience these side effects. Start with a smaller dosage and assess your tolerance, then you can work your way up.
