Iron
UNDER CONSTRUCTIONIron is one of the most abundant metals on Earth, but it is also one of the most critical nutrients for human life. Iron plays a critical role in oxygen transport, and it is also essential to cell growth and differentiation. A deficiency in iron can lead to any one of a variety of health concerns including:
- Fatigue
- Poor performance
- Decreased immune system function
However, too much iron can also lead to serious health problems and even death.
There are two forms of iron - heme and non-heme. Heme iron comes from hemoglobin, which is the protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen. Heme iron comes from animal sources such as red meat, fish and poultry. Non-heme iron comes from plant sources such as beans and lentils. Heme iron is the superior source for iron since it is absorbed more easily by the human body.
The typical RDA for iron is 18mg, but certain individuals may require more or less depending on their health conditions.
