Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are one of the three macronutrient categories, and they are divided into three categories themselves;
Carbohydrates play critical roles in energy production, food digestion and even proper brain function. Each gram of carbohydrate has 4 calories per serving, however the different classes of carbs all affect insulin levels very differently.
Starches come from sources like potatoes, oatmeal and rice. These carbs are digested slower, producing a steadier insulin release and longer, more sustained energy.
Sugars can come from processed sources like candy and soda, or natural sources like fruits. The processed sources produce a rapid output of insulin (known as a spike) and can boost energy quickly, but cause a crash later. Natural sources of sugar are more steadily burned and do not cause such dramatic insulin spikes or energy swings.
Fiber sources do not impact insulin levels, and they add bulk to meals allowing for a more satiated feeling. Fibers are generally found in vegetables, but they are also present in many other carbohydrate sources.
